Successive overlays of noise functions displace the outer shell of a base mesh at different scales, creating a texture reminiscent of the tumultuous forces shaping the Earth's crust. Inner Workings
In the Magma Shroud designs the base mesh is displaced by Musgrave and Voronoi noise functions. The former is designed to generate a wide range of natural textures, from turbulent clouds to rugged terrains. It can simulate a variety of fractal-like structures, where the texture exhibits self-similarity across different scales. The latter is based on Voronoi tessellation, which divides a space into regions around a set of seed points. Voronoi noise is useful for creating patterns that resemble cells, bubbles, or cracks, making it ideal for simulating the polygonal structures often seen in rocks.
When Musgrave and Voronoi noise functions are combined, a suitable choice of parameters can produce a texture that closely resembles the layered appearance of sandstone.
